In this paper, a model is presented for predicting the noise generated by the interaction of atmospheric turbulence with a shrouded propeller. The model proposed is equivalent to the turbulent inflow noise model of an unshrouded propeller presented by Robison and Robison & Peake , however it has been extended to account for the effect of the shroud. Unlike that model we have assumed that the blade chord-length is acoustically compact and have used isolated blade response functions to calculate the blade loading. These approximations are generally valid for the small propellers investigated in this study which typically have low blade numbers and should result in significant reductions in computational cost. The model incorporates a method to account for the effect of the shroud on the mean-flow induced by the propeller, and the acoustic scattering effect of the shroud.

This noise is generated by the unsteady loading on the blades produced by their interaction with the incoming turbulence. One of the sources of this turbulent inflow is the naturally occurring turbulence in the atmosphere. As this turbulent air is sucked towards the propeller, the turbulent eddies become elongated such that a single eddy interacts multiple times with the propeller blades over several propeller revolutions. This causes correlated loading between corresponding points on each propeller blade and results in a radiated noise spectrum which has a sharp peak at the blade passing frequency and its harmonics.

The other two, a trailing edge with boundary layer vortex generators and a trailing edge with rounded serrations cut into the blade, both introduce streamwise vorticity in the wake of the hydrofoil, as shown by particle image velocimetry measurements. The trailing edge of the hydrofoil is made exchangeable, so that a direct comparison of the strain intensity levels measured with a structurally embedded strain gauge bridge located close to the trailing edge can be made. The results indicate that the vortex generators are effective at mitigating the lock-in state of resonance and significantly reduces the maximum strain intensity measured, compared to the more conventional reference design. Velocity measurements both at lock-off conditions as well as close to resonance reveal a de-correlation of the streamwise velocity fluctuations in the wake for this design, suggesting that the von Kármán type vortex shedding is weakened even at resonance conditions.

We also conducted an experimental evaluation of the time delay of wave propagation between the external ear tissues and the auditory canal air to confirm the numerical observations. Thus, we measured delays to reach the ear canal during stimulation with a transducer at the back of the concha and at the tragus of 0.37 ms and 0.32 ms respectively. This matched the numerical simulations and corroborated transmission through the skin.
